Heading tags (or H tags) are used to define page headings, there are a series of H tags ranging from H1 to H6 and all are supported in all the major browsers. The importance of these tags are relevent to the number (1-6), where H1 is the most important, and H6 is the least important. The H1 tag should surround the main heading of the page relevant to the content and should be positioned at the top of the content (not in the header or sidebar, but at the top of the main content area). For example, if you sell fruit, and you have an article or page about “Apples”, this should be in your H1 tags. If you discuss various types of apples within this page, you might use H2 or H3 tags for these sub-headings. Using H tags will help the search engine determine the importance of the words when it crawls your website. Where possible, you should also include at least your primary keyword (the main keyword for your page) within the H1 tag. It is also worth remembering that heading tags usually make the text contained in them larger than the normal text on the page, this also helps highlight to users that the text included in your H1 tag is important to the content of your page. Imagine you’re writing an outline – Similar to writing an outline for a large paper, put some

thought into what the main points and sub-points of the content on the page will be and

decide where to use heading tags appropriately.

Avoid:

• placing text in heading tags that wouldn’t be helpful in defining the structure of the page
• using heading tags where other tags like <em> and <strong> may be more appropriate
• erratically moving from one heading tag size to another

Use headings sparingly across the page – Use heading tags where it makes sense. Too

many heading tags on a page can make it hard for users to scan the content and determine

where one topic ends and another begins.

Avoid:

• excessively using heading tags throughout the page
• putting all of the page’s text into a heading tag
• using heading tags only for styling text and not presenting structure
